With female athletes from around the world in every sport you can think of PledgeSportsWe come across many health related stories and one such is the female athlete triad. It is a syndrome characterized by eating disorders (or low energy availability), amenorrhea and decreased bone mineral density (osteoporosis and osteopenia). Also known as triad. The female athlete triad is a syndrome of three interrelated conditions. Thus, if an athlete is suffering from one element of the triad, it is likely that he is also suffering from the other two components of the triad.
symptoms and causes
Some of the main symptoms of Tridosha –
- weight loss
- bone loss
- absent or abnormal periods
- stress fracture
- fasting or limiting food intake
- binge eating
- self induced vomiting
- insanity workout.
Clinical signs of triad may include disordered eating, fatigue, hair loss, cold hands and feet, dry skin, noticeable weight loss, increased healing time from injuries. Affected women may also struggle with low self-esteem and depression.
Most Common Sports Injuries and Some Treatments
Gymnastics, figure skating, ballet, diving, swimming and long-distance running are examples of sports that emphasize low body weight. The triad is seen more often in beauty sports such as these versus ball games. Women who participate in these sports may have an increased risk of developing the female athlete triad. Many factors seem to contribute to disordered eating behaviors and clinical eating disorders as many top female athletes are set to extreme dieting over long periods of time to keep their calories under control.

Can the female athlete triad be prevented or avoided?
There are things you can do to prevent the female athlete triad, especially if you are at risk.
- Eat a nutrient-rich, balanced diet.
- Get a moderate amount of exercise.
- get plenty of rest.
- Find ways to reduce stress.
- Talk to a doctor or counselor to get help.
Treatment involves correcting this imbalance of energy consumed by the body and energy intake from foods. This is done either by increasing the calories in the diet or by reducing the calories burned by exercise for 12 months or more. To be more concise, athletes are advised to simply eat more and exercise less to keep the body functioning. Women can also seek help through treatment from pharmacies. To induce menstruation and improve bone density, doctors may prescribe cyclic estrogen or progesterone as is used to treat post-menopausal women. Patients may also be put on oral contraceptives to encourage regular menstruation.
Without treatment, the female athlete triad can cause long-term health problems. When combined with low body weight, it can even lead to death.
