2016 has been a great year for us, but it has been built so purely through great people that we have been privileged to work with on a daily basis.
To honor the wonderful time our athletes have given us over the past 12 months, we wanted to give them something back. One of them in particular.
And so, the PledgeSports Athlete of the Year for 2016 is… Jim Gump!
This guy is our “Athlete of the Year” because he’s doing something amazing.
It’s one thing to take on an incredible challenge to better yourself, it’s quite another to do it for many others.
After watching the 2012 London Olympics, Jim Plunkett-Cole (Jim Gump) felt inspired. In January 2013, he decided to run 10 km per day every day for the whole year.
Fast forward to October 2016 and the gym was still running. In fact, he had been running for 1,366 days without fail, clocking an incredible 10,000 continuous miles in the company of his trusty collie, Alfredo.
On October 1, 2016, Jim Gump covered 20,000 miles through America. This run, upon completion (30,000 miles), would be the longest continuous run in history.
Why is he doing this? easy. Inspiring children across the world to lead healthier, more active lifestyles and fight the growing obesity issue among our younger generation.
The issue of obesity is not new or important, we all know it exists. But, do you know how prominent it is in children?
In the US alone, childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years.
In the United States, the percentage of children aged 6–11 who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to approximately . Have become 18% in 2012.
Today 1 in 3 children in America is obese. it’s shocking 24.5 million Children who have heart disease, diabetes and are being set up for a very short life.
This fight is for the global population, don’t let Jim fight it alone
