Most people would have heard of standup paddleboarding or SUP by now and if not then you shouldn’t live too close to the water! Standup paddleboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the most versatile of all board sports. SUP can be used in flat water, rivers and rapids, touring, racing and surfing. And more recently there is SUP phishing and even SUP totals!
Some of its great benefits as a sport and exercise are:
- Standup paddleboarding is one of the best workouts for a full body workout.
- Improve balance: Standup paddleboarding requires you to stand upright on the board, which requires a lot of core stability and leg strength to maintain balance
- SUPing is a low-impact exercise that is a combination of balance, strength and stamina used whether you are paddling or simply balancing on your board.
Sports can be added to the Olympics in time.
7 fastest growing sports in the world
Records of earlier forms of sup and prawn have been found as early as 1,000 BC (i.e. 3,000 years ago). The contemporary form of the sport originated in the 16th century where Hawaiian surfers surfed on boards up to 5 metres. But it was Hawaii that really helped pioneer SUP, and then California that helped spread its popularity. The world’s first inland SUP event and race was held at Kings Beach on the northern shore of Lake Tahoe, California. It was dubbed “Ta-Ho Nalu” and it continues to this day. That 2007 event was arguably the world’s first stand up paddle specific event. Source – Wikipedia
7 sports that require ultimate fitness
You may need a 3mm+ wet suit depending on the time of year, water temperature and experience, but if you’re an experienced boarder you’re unlikely to fall so probably won’t need it in colder conditions. Wear a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer of long paddling.
Paddleboards are generally divided into 4 categories – surf, all round, flat and race boards. and can be solid or inflatable. Inflatable is very easy to transport and cheap but solid board and super stable with strong wind or choppy water and ultimate performance in regards to speed and agility or for tricks while surfing.
Finally you need a paddle.
