Standup paddleboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the world and the most versatile of all board sports. SUP can be used in flat water, rivers and rapids, touring, racing and surfing. Records of earlier forms of sup and prawn have been found as early as 1,000 BC (i.e. 3,000 years ago). The contemporary form of the sport originated in the 16th century where Hawaiian surfers surfed on boards up to 5 metres. But it was Hawaii that really helped pioneer SUP, and then California that helped spread its popularity. The world’s first inland SUP event and race was held at Kings Beach on the northern shore of Lake Tahoe, California. It was dubbed “Ta-Ho Nalu” and it continues to this day. You may need a 3mm+ wet suit depending on the time of year, water temperature and experience, but if you’re an experienced boarder you’re unlikely to fall so probably won’t need it in colder conditions. Wear a life jacket if you are not a strong swimmer of long paddling.

Paddleboards are generally divided into 4 categories – surf, all round, flat and race boards. and can be solid or inflatable. Inflatable is very easy to transport and cheap but solid board and super stable with strong wind or choppy water and ultimate performance in regards to speed and agility or for tricks while surfing.
